The old well in this front garden is a lovely focal point, but the garden itself was untidy and unloved. Our clients wanted a front garden that would be a pleasure to enter when they came home from work. It also had to complement their house and be low-maintenance. We started by replacing the unattractive, patchy lawn with gravel. Then we created a paved area for them to sit in to admire the plants. We disguised the ugly oil tank, which clashed with the pretty well, with an attractive trellis and climbers. The well itself was enhanced with an edging of colourful alpines. Finally a difficult shady spot was brought alive with ferns and variegated hostas. As a result of this front garden transformation, coming up the path was suddenly an uplifting experience. At last the well (and the fairies) finally had appropriately beautiful surroundings.
