Do you remember the hit song from the ’70s called ‘Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep’? No? Don’t worry, Chirp!, isn’t anything to do with that song. But it is about a kind of song. Birdsong. It’s a fun app for your iPhone or iPad that helps you to train yourself to recognise the calls and songs of garden birds. Browse pictures of the birds, read a bit about them and listen to their songs. Chirp! is great fun to play with, and is educational to boot. Using the app also has a soothing, calming effect. What I really love about this app is the challenges. They are quizzes where you are shown pictures and played birdsong and you have to tap the right bird for that song. You can also tailor the quiz to your needs, by selecting to be quizzed only on the birds you don’t already recognise easily. The faster you do it, the more you score. It really does get rather addictive! I’ve found that now, when I’m in my garden or walking in the woods, I recognise more and more birdsong and alarm calls.
Chirp! is a lot of fun if, like me, you love birdies. It comes in various languages and there is a Chirp! Europe and a Chirp! USA. There is also a version going cheap (that’s iSpiny’s joke, not mine! Mine, dear friends, are much worse); it’s a free version with less birds so you can try it before you buy it. But I think it’s well worth getting the full version.
That’s all for now. Must fly! Don’t forget to Tweet this! (I did warn you). 🙂
